Arthur Meighen Gravesite, St Marys, Ontario

Arthur Meighen died August 5, 1960 in Toronto.   A state funeral was held in St Andrew's United Church on Bloor Street East, Toronto.   A hearse, along with a cortege of 12 cars, took the casket for burial in St Marys Cemetery, Cain Street that afternoon.

Also buried there is his wife Isabel Cox who he met in 1902 in Winnipeg.   She was a school-teacher from Birtle who had come to see the fair.   He was meeting a prospective buyer of some farm land Meighen had in Portage La Prairie.   They married June 1, 1904.


The gravestone reads:

The Rt Hon Arthur Meighen PC QC
June 16, 1874 - Aug 5, 1960
and his wife
Jessie Isabel Meighen
Apr 18, 1883 - Sept 6, 1985

A commemorative plaque was installed in 1992
it says:

Arthur Meighen 1874 - 1960
Prime Minister of Canada
July 1920 - December 1921
June 1926 - September 1926
This marker was unveiled by
the Government of Canada on
the occasion of the 125th
anniversary of Confederation.
St Marys Cemetary

Also buried in the cemetary are Arthur Meighen's grandparents and his parents
Joseph Meighen and Mary Jane (Bell) Meighen.
